Goal | To teach children about famous sculptors throughout history and allow them to explore a new, fun media in art. |
Description | I would like to teach my 5th graders about using clay as a medium, as well as teach them about different artist who have created famous sculptures. We will first view a powerpoint presentation, outlining several artists famous for their work in sculpting, different techniques used, and some of the world's most recognizable (and school appropriate) statues and sculptures. Students will be quizzed on the material covered to ensure that they pay full attention. After they have learned about sculpting's history and process, students will learn hands-on what it is like to work with clay; sculpting their own bowls, cups, or plates. The finished pieces will be taken to a ceramic shop who rents out the services of their kiln and fired. Once the pierces have been fired, students will be free to take their art home. |
Benefits | Students will learn about famous sculptors and historically significant works of art. Students will learn first-hand what it is like to work with a material commonly used in sculpting. Sculping helps develop fine motor skills and can be therapeutic for many people. |
